I am caring for my Grandchildren, what rights do I have?
Unfortunately very few, unless you have parental responsibility for the children. Parental responsibility allows you to make decisions with regard to the children such as obtaining medical treatment or a change of school.
A parent can share parental responsibility with you, however, if you wished to change the children’s school for example you would have to get the permission from the parents or anyone else who has parental responsibility. If the children are to remain with you indefinitely then you could make an application to the Courts for either a residence or a special guardianship order. Which order you apply for will depend on your circumstances. If the children have been placed with you by Social Services then you may be entitled to financial assistance.
If you would like to secure the children’s future with you then please contact us so that we can discuss your situation in more detail.
