There are 200,000 family and friends carers or kinship carers. Most of these are grandparents, who are raising 300,000 children who can no longer live with their parents. This may be because of parental alcohol or substance misuse, abuse or neglect, domestic violence, bereavement, illness or disability, imprisonment or a combination of factors
Prior to taking on the care of a child, most grandparent carers are in work and similar to grandparents in the wider population. Research shows that as a result of their caring role, over half give up work or reduce their paid hours. Many are likely to experience poverty or poor health as a result. The majority are under 65. 4 out of 10 are parenting alone.
